An outstanding group of established community leaders and bankers came together to organize a new bank. All of the investors believed the pendulum had swung too far due to massive consolidations of banks which had occurred in the Greater Orlando area over the past several years, and there existed a lack of quality, well-managed independent banks in the marketplace. The bank is unique in that it was planned and organized by professional bankers. By design, ownership by any one person or group is limited to 9% and the bank oversubscribed its initial offering in just a few weeks to over 400 Central Florida stockholders, even after declining offers from several investors interested in purchasing major ownership positions. This philosophy is important to the organizers so as to build a diverse stockholder base, and to eliminate conflicts-of-interests which often occur with large control positions. The bank also does not have any institutional or venture capital investors, and takes a somewhat conservative, 'long-term' view in their operations. First Commercial was voted "Best Business Bank" in 2003 and 2007 in Orlando Business Journal's Reader's Choice Awards.
